10 Undesirable Personality Traits and How to Get Rid of Them

April 22, 2019

Many people want to tweak their personality traits just a little for one reason or another. Fortunately, a person’s personality is not cast on stone. Applying effort can help you change for the better. But the process of ridding yourself of some personality traits requires dedication and patience. You know, there's more to personality than just The Big 5.

Some of the top personality traits are:

  • Overly nice
  • Loyalty no matter what
  • Co-dependency
  • Low self-esteem
  • Self-centeredness
  • Focusing on external factors
  • Being highly passive
  • Jumping into things without thinking
  • Having trouble with letting go
  • High empathy
  • Not knowing who you are yet

So how can you get rid of these personality traits?

a. Visualize your ideal self

Think about the traits your ideal self has that you don’t possess and those that he or she doesn’t have and you do. Knowing this will help you work on getting rid of them.

b. Find people who inspire you

Try and discover your reasons for admiring certain people. It may be because they have a personality trait that you could cultivate in yourself. Find people in real life like public figures or read autobiographies to help you identify the traits that you admire and would like to have.

c. Ask whether you can turn negatives into positives

Though you may want to get rid of some personality traits because you think of them as negative, they may actually have some positives to them which you can leverage.

d. Choose one or two traits to focus on first

Getting rid of a personality trait as not as easy as it sounds. If you try to change multiple traits at once, it will be difficult for you to concentrate on any one of them. Instead, choose one or two important traits you would like to change and work on those. Leave the others for later.

e. Create a plan

You need to brainstorm on the specific steps you will take to get rid of those personality traits and build on new ones. For example, if you want to get rid of shyness, you can decide to greet a new person every day. This will help you overcome the shyness.

f. Focus on a goal

It is easy to stay motivated in getting rid of a trait if you have a goal in mind for making that change.

Focus on the larger positive aspects of making the change instead of concentrating on the negatives.

g. Be aware of your behavior

Don’t allow yourself to run on autopilot. Have a habit of paying attention to what you do and what you think. Take note of circumstances that portray your negative traits and develop strategies for handling those situations differently.

h. Use affirmations

Affirmations trick your brain into thinking you have already accomplished your desired outcome. This helps you to get rid of the traits quickly. Have some inspiring affirmations that reflect your goals and repeat them to yourself several times a day.

The process of getting rid of these personality traits and developing new ones requires patience and perseverance. With the right mindset and attitude, it is definitely possible.
